Message to industry – Beef and Veal supplemental applications refusals due to significant price difference between goods entering Canada and similar goods entering the U.S.

Due to recent global market trends, we are seeing significant differences in the prices of products imported into North America, with many products entering the United States at a higher price than similar products entering Canada. For this reason, any supplemental import requests for beef and veal received showing this significant price discrepancy between similar goods entering Canada and the United States will be refused.

Recall that this policy stems from Section 8.8 of the Notice to importers No. 855 which states that “Applications for supplemental permits will be denied if: i) The price of the goods landed in Canada is below the prevailing range of prices of similar product entering the United States”.

Supplemental requests are processed in accordance with the Export and Import Permits Act (EIPA), its regulations, and the Minister’s policies set out in the Notice to importers No. 855. These requests are assessed based on the information provided and in close collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
