Note: If you are a Canadian citizen and your child is born in Bolivia, your child is Bolivian by birth. You must register the birth at or at the closest in order to get a birth certificate.

If your child is born in Bolivia, a Bolivian passport will likely be required to leave the country. Bolivian children are subject to local regulations applicable to the exit of children from Bolivia.

Notarial services

The Embassy of Canada to Bolivia provides notarial services to Canadian citizens and, in limited cases, to non-Canadian citizens if the documents are intended for use in Canada.

The Apostille Convention came into effect on January 11, 2024. This resulted in some changes to the authentication services provided by the Government of Canada.

Documents issued in Canada to be submitted in Bolivia (or in other countries who are signatories of the Apostille Convention) should bear the apostille.

The Embassy of Canada in La Paz may issue an apostille on the following documents:

  1. Vital statistics documents issued in all provinces in Canada. An original document must be submitted.
  2. Original Criminal Record Checks issued by the RCMP in Ottawa.
  3. Public documents issued or notarized in the following provinces: Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island and Yukon.

Please send your scanned document to lapazconsular@international.gc.ca to verify if the Embassy may issue an apostille.

The Embassy cannot issue apostilles for the following:

  • Documents not listed above, and documents issued (other than Canadian vital statistics documents) or notarized in these provinces: Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan. For such documents, please contact the competent provincial authority in Canada

Processing time: 3 to 5 working days.

Fee: CAD 50 / BOB 270.00 per apostille.

If a document will be used in a country that is not a signatory to the apostille, please check with the destination country as to their requirements.

Documents issued in Bolivia are to be apostilled by Bolivian authorities.

  • A consular officer may certify a true copy of a Canadian Vital Statistics document to be Apostilled (exceptions apply, fees apply).

Attestation of signatures / affidavits

  • A consular officer may witness /attest your signature on a document ( required) (fees apply). The Embassy does not offer certain services which can be provided by notaries public (list of local providers available).
