Report to Parliament on the Government of Canada's International Assistance

Find out how the Government of Canada protects the interests of Canadians and addresses global challenges through international assistance. The 2023-2024 report shows how the government’s international assistance tackles global problems that impact us all, such as:

  • climate change
  • conflict
  • poverty.

This report features results international assistance has achieved through collaboration with:

  • partner countries
  • locally led organizations
  • multilateral organizations
  • international organizations
  • Canadian civil society.

This report provides real-world examples of how Canadian international assistance is having an impact.

Examples include:

  • advancing gender equality and promoting the rights of women and girls
  • supporting the poorest and most vulnerable with food, shelter and basic needs
  • tackling climate change and biodiversity loss
  • Improving access to quality education and strengthening global health systems

Highlights

1) The Government of Canada contributed close to $800 million in humanitarian assistance. We reinforced our commitment to reduce human suffering and increase human dignity. Together, we contributed to assisting and protecting over 19 million refugees and internally displaced people globally.

2) The Canadian government supported the Global Partnership for Education. They helped 120 million students worldwide access education. This support enabled 481,000 teachers to receive essential training. They helped renovate or build more than 6,700 classrooms.

3) Last year, more than 7.7 million people benefitted from climate change adaptation initiatives supported by the Canadian government. Canada’s funding helped developing countries cut 282 megatonnes of carbon dioxide pollution from the atmosphere.

Official Development Assistance Accountability Act

The annual Report to Parliament on the Government of Canada’s International Assistance is a legislative requirement under the , which came into force on June 28, 2008.  

This report provides an overview of Canada’s federal official development assistance activities achieved through the collective efforts of ¶¶ÒùÊÓÆµ and 20 departments and agencies. 

The first section of this report is a whole-of-government overview of Canada’s federal international assistance activities. The second section reports on Canada’s engagement with international financial institutions. 

This report is complemented by the Statistical Report on International Assistance. It is published in the spring each year.
