Marriage abroad

The requirements for marriage are set exclusively by the authorities of the country in which you intend to get married.

In Türkiye, only civil marriage is legal. Civil marriage in Türkiye is officiated by the Marriage Bureaus of the Municipalities, in each of the provinces.

Canadian consular officers cannot solemnize marriages. Further, the solemnization of marriage is not allowed inside the consular premises, even if performed by an individual authorized by the laws of the foreign country.

Some things to consider if you are planning to get married in Türkiye:

Before you leave Canada, contact the Municipality Marriage Bureau where the marriage will take place, to confirm required documentation. Requirements can differ between municipalities.

To officiate your marriage, you may need to have your Canadian documents officially translated to local language and authenticated/Apostilled by the competent provincial authorities or Government of Canada Authentication department prior traveling to Türkiye. Take into account their processing time and plan your request and your wedding date accordingly.

Contact the Embassy of Canada in Ankara or the Consulate of Canada in Istanbul by the following email addresses, to get information about the ‘single status’ declaration form, requested by the local authorities.

Notarial services

If you are seeking to authenticate a Canadian document for use in Türkiye, the process has changed since the entry into force of the Apostille Convention in Canada on January 11, 2024. The Apostille process simplifies the acceptance of Canadian public documents in the more than 120 countries that have signed the convention, including Türkiye.

Authenticated documents now receive a standard certificate called an apostille. The competent authority to authenticate and issue an apostille depends on the location and the authority that originally issued or notarized the document. Please visit Changes to authentication services in Canada for more information.

Please send your inquiries on notarial and apostille services to ANKRA-Consular@international.gc.ca or ISTBL-Consular@international.gc.ca.
